The Talon eagerly accepts submissions of articles on a wide range of topics affecting UBC students, whether they be campus-specific or much broader in scope. All articles must be rooted in anti-oppressive frameworks and be written in a way that is accessible to the average reader. We also endeavour to publish pieces in which the author is intimately connected to the struggle or topic they discuss. The Talon is especially interested in receiving submissions from Indigenous people, people of colour, queer and trans folk, people from low-income backgrounds, neurodiverse and/or folks with disabilities. Please note that the editorial collective retains the right to turn down any submission, at any point in the editorial process, at our own discretion.
You are welcome to submit a finished product to us. However, we prefer to receive story pitches over completed articles so that we can make sure you are on the right track before you dedicate your time to a piece. In your pitch, please outline your idea, proposed sources, and the angle that you wish to take on the topic. Casual pitches in point form are welcome.
We are also looking for people to become regular contributors. If this is something you’d be interested in, don’t hesitate to let us know.
NEW! Multimedia & Creative Submissions
Along with the guidelines below, here are some additional items to look out for in your multimedia and creative submissions.
Creative writing
- 4,000 words or fewer in length.
- Include title, author’s name and word count
Images (including photography, illustration, graphic novel, and other visual media)
- JPEG format
- please send images with resolutions 300dpi or higher.
- If you choose to include write ups, an artist statement, or accompanying notes, please submit with your images
Video & Audio
- Please submit YouTube (or another host’s) links rather than attaching the file directly to the email. If you are uncomfortable with hosting your work with a 3rd party, please email The Talon for alternative options.
We require adherence to the following guidelines for any articles published on The Talon:
- No oppressive language or arguments. These include, but are not limited to, racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, classism, and ableism.
- No conspiracy theories.
- We don’t want to get hit with a lawsuit for libel. So: no unsubstantiated personal attacks please.
- Trigger/content warnings should be at the top of the article if applicable.
- Sensitive issues should be approached with tact and respect.
- All articles must be written in an accessible way, limiting jargon as much as possible (or explaining terminology in plain language, where necessary).
- We recommend that you make an effort to relate the content of the article back to the campus context. Please try, where possible, to explain why the issues you are exploring are impacting UBC students or local residents.
- If you could be reasonably accused of having a conflict of interest as the author of a piece, please let us know so that we can include a disclaimer at the top of the article. For example: if you work for the NDP and are writing an op-ed about the LPC.
- Factual claims should be supported by citations to credible sources. Scientific claims should be supported by articles in peer-reviewed journals or popular science articles which cite them.
We are happy to publish articles anonymously at the author’s discretion. When you submit a piece, please specify whether you would prefer to publish anonymously or with your name attached to the writing.

To take on a pre-imagined article project, please contact us with a bit of info about your interests and social justice background. We will be happy to set you up with an appropriate assignment and a liaison editor.
