“Pictures in Protest” put on in collaboration with the Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights Group by Zoe Hertz, will be showcasing a series of photographs depicting the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The exhibition will seek to explore the often-marginalized Palestinian perspective as a result of biased Western media sources and the implications that this has caused. The show will take you on a journey of protests throughout the West Bank which Hertz photographed during her time in Palestine. The exhibition will also explore Hertz’s own experience of transformation as a UBC exchange student going to Tel-Aviv in Israel. After one semester of what was supposed to be a full year of studying, she quickly became a ‘university dropout’ after growing frustrated with the Israeli-biased curricula, where her curiosity pulled her to the other side of the wall for the remainder of her time abroad. Here she dedicated the remainder of her time abroad to researching the conflict and documenting the situation while working alongside other organizations in Palestine. After her transformative experience abroad, she now brings “Pictures in Protest” back home to UBC in an attempt to pass this message on to the world without the tainting of biased messengers. This exhibition stands as a call to justice for the Palestinian people, as well as this journey of transformation, now seeking to transform the understandings of its audience in hopes of bringing us one step closer to a more just world for all. The show will be up for viewing from September 6th through 14th and the the exhibition opening will be Tuesday, September 11th from 7 – 10 pm, and will be featuring Palestinian snacks, guest speakers (starting at 7:30 pm), a Q&A, a bar, and more.
