Note: The author recognizes that this piece was written on the ancestral, traditional and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh), and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) nations. It is important to recognize the ways in which settler colonialism has attempted to impose gender binarism and cisheteropatriarchal gender roles. The author would […]

Though, despite this work being done, the Digital Humanities still rely heavily on cisgender, heterosexual, white men. BIPOC queers, Two-Spirit’s and women are tired of being the anomaly. Or, at least, I am; and I’m sure I’m not the only one.

Social Trustice, The Struggles of Detangling

By

Anonymous wants to highlight their positionality as an economically privileged and financially dependent disabled settler of colour with other significant intersections; Anonymous uses all the pronouns, but prefers “he/they”.   I’ll stand up to the white men the rich men the Old Boys and the new start a magazine and stop eating so many bloody […]

To the UBC community, This letter is intended as a set of guidelines towards the creation of a queer- and trans-friendly, and broadly socially-just, learning environment. Is there some legitimacy in what he brings up about free speech and a culture of polarization that we too are concerned about? Absolutely. Dear Mrs. Trudeau, By now, the reality of your Women’s Day Instagram post, where you showcase your husband’s activism, has reached hundreds of thousands of people, and the backlash has been swift and brutal. It is not my intention to approach this with anger, or contempt; but rather with this letter I attempt to educate […]

Reflections on Raising and Burning Flags…

By

As a queer man, the recent burning of the gay rainbow flag at the University of British Columbia has not caused me any lost sleep. I can assure you, however, that I’m not impervious to homophobic threats or attacks, nor am I apathetic to the struggles of the several marginalized communities that I navigate and […]
