We are UBC’s alternative press, operated by an editorial collective of students just like you. We focus primarily on providing a platform for social justice issues and anti-oppression politics. Live music, slam poetry, things that have recently inspired you, a podcast-style skit — we’re setting up a cozy, safe space for you to share your talents and your thoughts! With your consent, we will also record your performance and publish it on The Talon website as part of our exciting new podcast series

JOURNALISM WORKSHOP: JUSTICE AND ACCOUNTABILITY IN MEDIA 101: Justice & Accountability in Media is a crash course in understanding anti-oppression and positionality as they relate to making and consuming media. Our discussion of media will span platforms and mediums, from social to mainstream to independent and community-based media. Together, we’ll take a look at language and representation (such as headlines and images from recent stories) and talk about how we can practice more accountable journalism—and empower storytelling that is rooted in community voices.
SHORT FILM SCREENING: THE REAL PRICE OF FOOD
“The Real Price of Food” has been created in collaboration with Migrant Workers Dignity Association (MWDA) as a joint effort to expose the harsh reality of the Canadian food system that is conveniently hidden from the public view. Produced with no funding, this video is a raw glimpse into the lives and stories of the people who help grow the food you get at your table every day. This is a work in progress that is currently being shown to raise awareness and to stimulate sensitivity among the viewers which we hope to continue once the video is finalized.
These are real stories from real people that have been hidden away from the average Canadian for too long and that have been struggling to come to light. This video is a glance to the organization and the people who work along with temporary farm workers for a better future.
Part of the process of producing this video involved direct interactions with the workers, including interviews and visits to the farms, which was only possible thanks to MWDA’s facilitation.
